Why we chose to highlight this story: Hurricane Helene claimed the lives of at least 227 people in six southeastern states between Florida's Gulf Coast to the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia. All of Appalachia — which includes Beaver County — is mourning the devastation. Read Post Industrial's story about how neighbors are helping one another in North Carolina.

If you're interested in giving financially to aid those on the ground, The United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County has a fund here.

Locally, Hopewell Youth Football and Cheer League is collecting items to take to North Carolina. Donations are being accepted until Friday. Pawmazing Bakery is also accepting donations and so is Frye Transportation.

Why we chose to highlight this story: The political season can be uncomfortable in many ways and it can lead many of us to feel uncertain, cynical and disconnected. Although Kretchmar's election cookie poll is lighthearted in nature, perhaps it's an opportunity to connect with your neighbor in a different way. Maybe, instead of arguing over policy or rhetoric — usually behind the comfort of our Facebook pages — our community can break down the barriers that so often keep us from truly understanding why our neighbor believes what they believe and vote the way they do. Perhaps, a silly cookie poll can create opportunities to dignify one another through mutual respect and a listening ear.

Or, at the very least, it's an excuse to support a local, beloved business and indulge in something sweet.

Why we chose to highlight this story: Hilary Flint, a Beaver County resident and local environmental justice advocate with Beaver County Marcellus Awareness Community (BCMAC), was featured in a story from the Allegheny Front about how petrochemical disasters affect those with disabilities.
